Portrait Of A Janitor is the autobiography of William Meehan, written as he lived each experience and thought. He was born in Nebraska in 1897, the son of an Irish/German father and an African Canadian mother. Bill, raised in a family and community of African descended Nebraska Homesteaders, grew up working the family farm, but he loved words and books and harbored dreams of becoming an attorney. Portrait Of A Janitor follows Bill from the Nebraska Sandhills at about age 13 to manhood in Chicago in the 1930s. The many poems he wrote reflect his love for his homeland as well as the life lessons and values he learned growing up there. He pursued his dream of becoming an attorney by taking various classes and by honing his speaking skills but he spent most of his adult life as a chauffeur, working in Chicago area steel mills, and eventually as a gardener and general handyman. Portrait Of A Janitor reveals the heart of a true renaissance man who was most often hidden behind the clothing and preconceived perceptions of a class- and race-biased world that saw Only A Janitor.
