The Human Current is based on a ten month period in the life of Angus Carpenter, an Australian corporate lawyer working in London. Angus, while young, bright and privileged, is troubled by his perceived inadequacies and inability to maintain the attention of his socialite girlfriend, Esti. The work at Angus firm dries up, leading Angus to take on work for Ivan, a businessman and philanthropist. At Ivans instruction, Angus engineers a transaction for Ivan that involves acquiring an unproven technology and licensing it to Ivans contacts across West Africa. As the deal progresses Angus becomes increasingly suspicious that the transaction is a merely a ruse to launder money into the UK. The moral bind stresses Angus, who becomes increasingly reliant on a cocktail of prescription and recreational drugs, which detrimentally affects his relationship, decision making and his mental and physical health. As he approaches the precipice, he finds solace in the arms of a co-worker, only for his grandpa to pass away and his long ignored family to plead for him to come home for the funeral.
