An Impressionist painting is a window onto the worldfleeting, perhaps, but exquisite in its ability to capture a moment in time. Post-Impressionism arose in the late nineteenth century in response to the limitations of Impressionisms objective recording of nature. Emotion, color, formand abstract tendenciescame to define the Post-Impressionist period.
Van Gogh, Matisse, Czanne, Gauguin, Rousseau, and Seurat built upon the brilliant colors and brushwork of Impressionism. Working independently, each artist developed a distinct, identifiable style as seen in portraits, landscapes, and still lifes.
These twelve paintings in this calendar are in the collection of the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania, established by Dr. Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts. SC N001864.
