Vibrant colors and strong shapes characterize the recent work of Northwest artist Cumming, who has been making paintings, prints, and drawings for 70 years. A retrospective exhibition of his work is currently on view at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle. In this exhibition catalog independent curator and art historian Kangas traces the development of Cumming's work from his early pieces in the style of socialist realism, to his later work with more vivid colors and painterly mark making. Throughout Cumming's long career, and regardless of changes in the art world, the artist remained committed to socially relevant subject matter, and to representational depiction of the figure. The catalog includes over 70 full color plates, and provides an interesting look at the last living artist associated with the Northwest School.
